Cathal, Winter Mountaineering in Scotland

Cathal is my name, but I’m often called Charlie inside of Scouting. I’m 19 years old and am currently studying Engineering in NUIG. I started my scouting adventure when I was 10 or so, which involved my younger sister and I taking part in a county orienteering event. My dad was a leader so we went along and we ended up coming second in the under-13 category! I have always had an interest in the outdoors and soon after this event I was down at meetings as a Scout in the 1st Galway St Joseph’s group.

Fast forward almost 10 years and my enthusiasm for Scouting is still as strong as ever. I’ve been involved non stop and have been introduced to camping, hiking, kayaking, backwoods (bushcraft) as well as a huge range of other skills through my time in Scouts. I’ve travelled to Jamborees, been abroad, taken part in national competitions and am involved in youth representation for the Western Province. I’ve grown a love for adventure and since starting college here in Galway, I’ve become heavily involved with the Mountaineering Club and with the Rover Society with the aim to do more and to inspire more.

I’m looking forward to taking part in the Belt and all the challenge and adventure it will bring with it, but I’m also hoping we can make a start of big challenges for Galway and put something back into the community.

That’s all from me!

Cathal.
